paddlesports coverage in Time Magazine

I was flipping through the October 25 issue of Time magazine and happened across a great article on paddlesports. Today I remembered that paddlesports article and went to the Time site and pulled it up there as well. Nice read overall. Wish it said canoe numbers were up as well as the kayak numbers, but it does point out the surge in interest in solo sports like paddling. Very nice to see paddlesports get some mention in a national magazine.

a nice Quietwater paddlesports article in the paper

Quietwater Films received a very nice bit of newspaper coverage today. Here is a pdf of the article that was written by Brian Lavendel and published in the Outdoors section of the Wisconsin State Journal.

a test run on a high definition video website

Prior to discovering Vimeo this week, I had not heard of high definition online video.
So I uploaded a rough cut to see what online high def video looks like. I think it looks great. This rough cut clip is taken from a canoe design segment of our upcoming tandem canoe movie. If you view this clip, be sure and click the "full" icon in the lower right corner of the Vimeo page. That will give you the HD screen.

Google Earth and the mysteries of a KML file

Google Earth is a free desktop application. It is a Google "thing" and can be freely downloaded to your own computer. I've been messing around with it and recently produced my very first KML file (Keyhole Markup Language) that will show you an aerial view of Lake Wazeecha, which was the subject of our first "pleasant place to paddle" column in our newsletter.
Please note that for the link to work and the KML file to open, you first need to have downloaded Google Earth.

canoeing with our dog

We added a quick little podcast in iTunes, on canoeing with your Dog. Darren's dog is "Gracie". He offers some notes on what he did to get Gracie comfortable in a canoe. Here's a link to the Quietwater Films podcast and here's a link to the online video piece of canoeing with your dog.

The kayaking DVD has been released. You can purchase it from our website. But feel free to view some clips of the contents as well. This is a big "yahoo" moment for us! We hope you will enjoy it as well!

Over the weekend we added some video podcasts to iTunes. iTunes is worth a look, there are some other interesting podcasts as well.

If you open up iTunes and go to the store:

  1. click on podcast in the store category list

  2. now click video podcast in the upper middle of the main screen

  3. back in the podcasts listing there is a sports & recreation - click that it's near the bottom

  4. after it refreshes now there is one more box further down

  5. in this final box there is an "outdoors" category - click that

  6. at this point I then search on kayak...but I like to browse through all of the other outdoor podcasts too.

more rain and more progress

In spite of a few breaks to deal with the downside of my new beach front property, today was a good day. We burned our final test copies of the kayak DVD. Replication is the next step!

summer rain means more paddling water

Immense amounts of rain here in south central Wisconsin have given many people, including me, some unexpected paddling opportunities!

very nice reception at the OR show - we picked up national distribution!

Back from the Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City. The OR show is to Outdoor Rec what Comdex was to Information Technology. Our newest DVD " paddling the recreational kayak" was well received.

End of summer nears - kayak DVD end is near too

Sadly, the Tour de France is nearing an end. Even though this year's version has seen some drug-induced ugliness, cycling remains one of my favorite non-water sports. The end of the tdf is also the first harbinger of the end of summer. Happily, we are done editing the kayak dvd and should have that out the door asap.

Lake Wazeecha is a great spot!

We (Jeff B and family) went to our favorite spot in Wisconsin for the July 4th holiday. South Wood County Park surrounds Lake Wazeecha, right in the middle of Wisconsin. Wisconsin Rapids is the closest city. The campground that is part of SWCP is the nicest campground I've been to in the state so far. Lake Wazeecha is a little gem. Especially in the early AM before the motorboats are out.

"paddling the recreeational kayak" nears completion

Final day of filming kayak content. We've been trying to do more in an urban setting. Partly because a.) Madison, WI., where we all live, is full of lakes. b.) We can get up early and be filming in the AM before the wind starts to blow. Wind noise is a real hassle. c.) Paddling in urban areas is a great way to get more time on the water. Too many people save up their time all the while waiting for the vacation. We're trying to save our time AND fit a bunch of quick, pleasant trips into our days.

"paddling the solo canoe" won a Telly Award

A letter came in the mail today informing us that our first movie, "paddling the solo canoe" had won a Telly Award. Made for a nice surprise in the mail. Like your refund check from the IRS only without the money.

yes the title is purposely lower case

The title of our movie "paddling the solo canoe" is purposely titled with lower case words. Why? Even though we are both big fans of the English language...even native speakers, we decided to let our rebellious inner selves out and spell the title in lower case words. It is not a typo, we did it on purpose. Sorry Mom. And yes I can remember my high school English teacher - Joe Giesen - I wonder where he is now?

starting to produce " paddling the solo canoe"

January 29, 2007 - Back from a whirlwind winter tour of Tennessee looking for (and finding) enough open water in which we can film our first movie. Happily, we found a great camera operator, Mike Samstag, (thanks DVX user) who met us early Saturday morning and led us to a perfect setting on Watts Bar Lake, TN.
